An analysis of 200 Reddit URLs cited by AI engines, set against 503,152 Reddit citations measured across five client accounts and three providers over 12 months. The findings run against most of what social-first content strategy assumes.

Reddit is cited by every provider, at scale
Citation counts represent the number of prompts in which Reddit appeared as a sourced result in an AI answer.

Two providers account for 93% of Reddit citations. No provider ignores it: even Gemini, the lowest of the three, generated 36,235 Reddit citations across the same client base.

Each of the 200 cited URLs was checked against the filter a content strategist would normally apply, a minimum upvote count. Any post below that threshold is one an AI engine cited and the filter would have skipped.

Q&A structure is the strongest predictor
79% of the 200 cited URLs follow a question-and-answer shape: the OP asks, the community answers. The title carries the intent signal for retrieval; the thread carries the knowledge to extract.
The Q&A pair mirrors the format AI engines are optimized for: match a query to an answer. A question title is a retrieval handle, and everything below it is extractable knowledge.
Age, size, and language are not filters
Post age, subreddit size, and language all span the entire scale of what Reddit contains, so none of the three works as a filter.
On age: the youngest cited post was 7 days old, and 89% of the set is younger than 5 years. More than half of the 200 cited URLs are older than 2 years, and archived threads that cannot receive new input are still cited. 11% of the cited set is older than 5 years, with posts from 2011 cited in answers generated in 2026.
On size: over 100 distinct subreddits appear across just 200 URLs, spread across the full size range. 7 of the 200 URLs came from subreddits with under 10,000 weekly visitors, while the largest communities in the set reach 3,800,000 weekly visitors. Size correlates with nothing; topical relevance is the only filter.
On language: AI engines index Reddit multilingually. English, Dutch and Hungarian threads all appear in the cited set. A non-English post that answers a relevant question is cited just as readily as an English one.
The page is the unit, not the post
A citation needs only two things: a title for discovery and some text on the page for extraction. Those two can come from entirely different contributors. The standard case is a question title and a thread of answers; everything else on the page is optional.
